According to Crikey, Woolworths, a grocery giant in Australia, has abandoned its plan to make all of its paper bags in the country and will continue outsourcing production to China and Vietnam

{reg}

The decision was made after realizing that the increased demand for paper bags, resulting from the phasing out of plastic bags, could not be met with local production alone. The company had previously announced a deal with Australian manufacturer Detpak to produce paper bags domestically. However, it became clear internally in mid-2022 that the goal could not be fulfilled.

Woolworths confirmed that it will still work with two Australian manufacturers, Detpak and Opal, but the exact percentage of bags made in Australia is considered "commercial in confidence." The decision to abandon the goal was not communicated to the public. Woolworths has phased out plastic bags in line with its plan, and competitors Aldi and Coles have also stopped offering lightweight plastic bags.
