India's coal imports surged to 162 million tons

Coking coal imports, which are crucial for steel production, grew by 5.4 percent to reach 54.46 million tons in fiscal year 2023 In March, non-coking coal imports reached 13.88 million tons, while coking coal imports amounted to 3.96 million tons.

Despite being one of the top coal-producing countries globally, India still relies on imports to meet a portion of its coal demand due to high consumption levels. The rising demand for steam coal and favorable seaborne prices are expected to drive continued growth in the coming months.

Overall, India's total coal imports, including other coal varieties, reached 249.06 million tons in fiscal year 2023. /p>
